La Philanthropie : Comprendre et Agir
Littéralement « amour de l’humanité », la philanthropie désigne aujourd’hui l'ensemble des dons librement consentis par des acteurs privés en faveur de l'intérêt général. Dans les médias, la philanthropie est incarnée aujourd’hui par les milliardaires américains Bill Gates et Warren Buffet qui ont donné une grande part de leur fortune à une fondation en faveur de la santé et de l’éducation. Mais cette vision est partielle : la philanthropie est très active dans la plupart des régions du monde, pas seulement aux Etats-Unis, et ce ne sont pas seulement les très riches qui donnent, puisque de nombreux particuliers et entreprises s’impliquent.

François Fénelon (1651-1715)
A French Roman Catholic archbishop, theologian, and poet best known as the author of The Adventures of Telemachus
  • the book Telemachus fills out a gap in Homer's Odyssey, recounting the educational travels of Telemachus, son of Ulysses, accompanied by his tutor, Mentor, who is revealed at the end of the story to be Minerva, goddess of wisdom
  • the Adventures of Telemachus is also a scathing rebuke to the autocratic reign of Louis XIV of France
  • the book has been referred to as "the true key to the museum of the eighteenth-century imagination"
  • one of the most popular works of the century and with its message of world peace, it was an immediate best-seller both in France and abroad
  • Fénelon's early education was provided by private tutors, who gave him a thorough grounding in the language and literature of the Greek and Latin classics
  • in 1675 at the age of 24 he was ordained as a priest
  • in 1685, the Church began a campaign to send the greatest orators in the country into the regions of France with the highest concentration of Huguenots to persuade them of the errors of Protestantism, and Fénelon was included in this group
  • in 1689, Fénelon was named the tutor of the grandson of Louis XIV, the 7-year-old Duke of Burgundy, who was second in line for the throne, and for whom Fénelon composed his Les Aventures de Télémaque
  • in 1693, Fénelon was elected to the Académie française
  • for Fénelon all wars were civil wars: humanity was a single society and all wars within it the greatest evil, and one's obligation to mankind as a whole was always greater than what was owed to one's particular country
