Temple of Jupiter Anxur at Terracina
Notes taken on January 27, 2014 by Edward Tanguay
Temple of Jupiter Anxur at Terracina
100 BC to 70 BC
spectacularly sited
accentuated the buildings from a distance
gave those in the buildings amazing views
best view is from the sea
you can only see the podium today, but it is well preserved
podium supported temple
temple
Etruscan plan and Greek elevation
probably stone construction
angle is slightly skewed, very unusual for the Romans
Romans typically had architecture facing at right angles
podium
made out of concrete
Opus Incertum
has panorama views through the lateral arches inside the arcades
exciting visual experience with the creation of vistas and panoramas, quintessentially Roman
had underground passageway: cryptoporticus
used for storage
it still exists and you can visit it
concrete, barrel-vaulted corridor
allowed light into the structure
meant to attract pilgrims from far and wide
seen from a boat and you would be drawn to them
off the beaten track but on the road from Rome to Naples
Temple of Hercules at Tivoli
75BC-50BC
similar to Temple of Jupiter Anxur in its intentions
also hoted social functions
rests on tall and large podium
circular staircase which adds drama, shaped like a theater
a place that people could gather and sit, probably to watch performances
temple pushed up against the back wall
characteristic of forum design as it is for sanctuary design
preserved in part
columns in between the arcades
opus incertum work
columns don't support anything, entirely for decorative purposes
columns made out of concrete
also has a cryptoporticus
not a storage area but a street
can still be seen today, looks like an underground subway
